Preity Zinta was born to Durganand Zinta and Nilprabha, in Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh. Her father was an officer in
the Indian Army. He died in a car accident when she was 13 years old; the accident also involved her mother, Nilprabha, who was severely injured and consequently remained bedridden for two years.
It was her father's accident which was the turning point in her life. She has two brothers; Deepankar and Manish, a year older and a year younger respectively. She studied at the Convent of Jesus and Mary boarding school in Shimla. Upon graduating from the boarding school at age 18, Zinta enrolled at St Bede's
College in Shimla. She graduated college with an English honours degree, and hen started a graduate programme in psychology. She earned a postgraduate degree in criminal psychology, but later took up modeling.
Her first film in Bollywood was with Shah Rukh Khan. She did her debut film in 1999 with Mani Ratnam's Dil Se opposite SRK. She made a mark in Bollywood with Kundan Shah's Kya Kehna where her performance was critically acclaimed. Since then she has been doing lot of films. In 2008, she was seen in Heroes with Salman Khan which was again a hit film.
Preity Zinta acquired ownership rights in 2008 for the Mohali-based Twenty20 cricket team of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The group paid $76 million to acquire the franchise, and have since named the team Kings XI Punjab. Until 2009, Zinta was the only woman to own an IPL team, and was the league's youngest owner.
